چکیده

We compare observed Pioneer Venus orbiter (PVO) gravity profiles over Aphrodite Terra to profiles predicted from models of thermal isostasy, mantle convection, and Airy compensation. Similar approaches are used in order to investigate how well the models can be distinguished with the PVO data. Topography profiles across Aphrodite are compared to model spreading ridge profiles in order to further assess this model. Airy compensation depths and convection layer thicknesses are greater under eastem Aphrodite than western Aphrodite. Compensation depths in the east are greater than most estimates of lithospheric thickness, uggesting that this part of the ridge is dynamically supported. In parts of westem Aphrodite, the spreading ridge model gravity provides a better fit to the data than either Airy compensation orman fie convection. Best-fit spreading rates are between 0.3 and 1.6 cm/yr. Airy compensation a d mantle convection cannot be distinguished in most places using only PVO data.

Bilateral Topographic Symmetry Patterns Across Aphrodite Terra, Venus

Western Aphrodite Terra, Venus, is characterized by a series of parallel linear structural discontinuities 2000-4000 km in length and 100-200 km wide, which strike at high angles to the general topographic trend of the Aphrodite Terra highlands. The broad characteristics of the cross-strike discontinuities (CSDs) are similar to both strike-slip fault zones and terrestrial oceanic fracture zones...

Evidence for divergent plate-boundary characteristics and crustal spreading on venus.

Detailed examination of the topography and morphology of western Aphrodite Terra reveals numerous features that are similar to terrestrial divergent plate-boundary characteristics. Individual domains between fracturezone-like discontinuities contain a variety of bilaterally symmetrical topographic elements that suggest that topographic features have been created at rise crests, rifted and separ...

N 92 - 10743 Hot - Spot Tectonics of Eistla Regio , Venus : Results From

Introduction. Eistla Regio is a broad, low, discontinuous topographic rise striking roughly EW at low northern latitudes of Venus. Some 2000x7000 km in dimension, it is the third largest rise in planform on Venus after Aphrodite Terra and Beta-Phoebe Regiones. These rises are the key physiographic elements in a hot-spot model of global tectonics [1] including transient plume behavior [2]. Since...

Venus: volcanism and rift formation in Beta regio.

A new high-resolution radar image of Beta Regio, a Venus highland area, confirms the presence of a major tectonic rift system and associated volcanic activity. The lack of identifiable impact craters, together with the apparent superposition of the Theia Mons volcanic structure on the rift system, suggest that at least some of the volcanic activity occurred in relatively recent geologic time. T...

Dextral Shear Deformation Belt on Southern Margin of Central Ovda Regio, Venus: Preliminary

Introduction: Crustal plateaus are a major class of tectonic features on Venus surface, and its study is essential in order to understand the geological evolution previous to the global resurfacing process. These regional units are flat topped highlands formed by tessera terrain, characterized by superposition of crosscutting structures [1-2], with complex tectonic patterns; also intratessera v...
